GSU Professor to Discuss New Regional History Center
Dr. Fred Brogdon, retired history professor of Georgia Southern University will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 7th meeting of the Sons of Confederate Veterans at the Western Steer, Brogdon is the Executive Director of the Altamaha Heritage Center in Lyons and will be discussing the plans for the new regional historical center. His program will follow a brief business meeting after 7:30.
“Plans are underway to create an interesting and worthwhile exhibition to showcase the heritage of the Altamaha River Basin and to benefit all the local history efforts in the surrounding area.” said Brogdon. “Everyone interested in this exciting regional showcase are encouraged to hear Dr. Brogdon’s program”, said Dixie Guards adjutant Tony Thompson. “If you had Dr. Brogdon as a professor at Georgia Southern, this is a wonderful opportunity to come hear him once again, speaking passionately about our local history,” said Thompson. “I think everyone will applaud this exciting new regional history center that will be headquartered very near Metter and I-16. The potential for tourism is enormous,” added Thompson.
The center is recruiting donations of historical items, documents and photographs related to the history of the Altamaha River Basin. They are also encouraging individuals and groups to join the Center as charter members. Anyone interested in donating or joining the Center can contact Heritage Center President Ann M. Dr. Brogdon Speaks to SCV
"Dr. Fred Brogdon, retired professor of history at Georgia Southern University explained plans for the Altamaha River Basin Heritage Center to the Candler County Sons of Confederate Veterans. Dr. Brogdon serves as executive director of the Altahama Hertiage Center. Dr. Brogdon laid out a ten point plan for the regional center including a play and museum to showcase the region's unique history.
